Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch; Part LXVI

We had the official first day of fall last week...

and the weather took its cue...we had foggy weather...

and it got down to 36 degrees...cold enough for the first fire of the season!

As promised by the weatherpersons, we got our first frost that night...

the pumpkin vines and some of the flowers were completely wiped out...

but some of the tougher prairie flowers were unaffected!

the frost was really pretty on all the green grass and plants...
but it was still time to bring in most of the rest of the veggies...
Giant turned many of the heirloom eggplants into...
eggplant parm, YUM!
And most of the tomatoes were still green, so...
Giant turned some of them into fried green tomatoes, YUM!

the rest of the fried green tomatoes we rolled in newspaper and put them in a shoebox in a cool, dark closet...Supposedly they will ripen and we'll have fresh tomatoes for Thanksgiving dinner-that's how Giants grandparents did it, hope it works for us!

The weather warmed back up after our first frost, and everything is still amazingly green-I even saw some little yellow butterflies flitting around the other day! Here's hoping for a loooong Indian Summer!

Even though it's been beautiful Indian Summer weather, we're still prepping, because we know..."winter is coming"!

We picked the last of the tomatillos, and will try tomatillo jelly for the first time...

and we ground up the last of the zucchini and froze it to make zucchini bread with all winter...and this is still the best zucchini bread recipe I've ever made YUM!
We also got to take a little road trip to my cousins wedding...more on that coming up, but man, I LOVE my cousins, and as you may be able to tell, we have just a little bit of fun when we're together lol!
Hope you're enjoying your fall y'all and until next time, happytrails!
