Don't Mess With My Women Fowl Doings

I thought we'd start this episode of FD with a little update on the baby Bantams...

They are all getting very big-they are entering that dorky and interminably long stage when they're no longer adorable puff-ball babies, but it's still gonna be a long time before they're attractive and useful adults-yep, basically they're teenagers lol!

They still all make a pretty picture in the garden, the I love how handsome the young roosters are, they look like Old English roosters!

Ozzie is still the Boss of All Bantams, and rules the roost in the garden flock though!

I'd been letting out each group of chickens-Americanas, New Chickens and Barn Chickens on a rotating basis, so that only one group was out free ranging at a time...

I was keeping them all separated because I wasn't sure how all the roosters would get along-Uncle Sam and Big Red had grown up next door to each other, but had never interacted, and the New Chickens rooster is new to everyone...

I finally decided to let two groups out together at the same time and see what happened-right before I took this picture, Big Red had come down from his flock of barn chickens, who mostly stay around the corrals when they're free-ranging, and snuck into the Americana coop...

Somehow Uncle Sam found out there was another rooster in the hen house...

and threw Big Red out of the coop...

for a minute, I thought Big Red was going to accept defeat and go quietly back to his own flock...

but not so much! They turned and faced each other...

and the feathers started flying! They went all Matrix and Kung Fu on each other for about 5 minutes...I was just starting to get worried, and was trying to remember if I'd ever heard anything about how to break up a cock fight...

when Big Red, although he's much bigger than Uncle Sam decided the fight really wasn't worth it-he was on another gang's turf, wasn't wearing the gang's colors, and was fighting over women that weren't his when he has his own flock...

So he mustered up all his dignity, and went back to his own flock! Neither of the roosters were injured-unless you count Big Reds wounded pride lol! For the next couple of days, Big Red would wander oh so casually down to the North 40 coops and try to rustle one of the Americana stragglers and cut her off from the herd, but the hens have very strong ideas about where they live and they refused to be swayed by Big Red's charms...Uncle Sam keeps an eye on things, but there haven't been any more fights between them...Until next time, happytrails!
