Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch; Part LI

This is a photo of our mud-room. When you come in through the garage, you walk through the mud-room before you get into the house, it really does help keep from tracking in some of the mud, hay, poop, etc that we drag in from the barn, stalls, corrals etc. It's a good sized room, and we use it to store falconry stuff, beekeeping stuff, egg cartons etc. Can you spot the thing that doesn't belong in this photo?
Here's a close-up in case you missed it-little mouse having a nap on an empty hive deep in the early morning sun...aww cute! BUT it won't be so cute when Mrs. Mouse produces 87,000 baby mice in nothing flat and they all get into my pantry...And that's nothing compaed to the the barn mouse situation-they're so numerous and blasé that they don't even run away from me-when I go into the barn, they're all like "hey y'all, there's that lady who brings grain, hooray! we'll go hang out over here in the corner until she leaves and then we can eat it all yippee!" I shudder to think of the hundreds and hundreds of dollars of feed the barn mice have eaten, no matter what we do, they find a way to get into the feed...hence:

The six new barn kittens! (PS, it is literally impossible to take a picture of 6 kittens together...believe me, I've tried lol!) So last weekend, we're all down at the barn and the kittens are all out playing, when...

Beetle invited himself (aka: snuck) into the barn...
All 120 pounds of big, dopey Lab that is Beetle LOVES cats and especially kittens...and somewhere in his little brain, he instinctively gets that kittens are afraid of him and he has to be very quiet and gentle around them...so he comes in very calmly and quietly (HGHLY unusual lol!) and just lays down by the kittens...

The kittens aren't having any of it for a while, but since Beetle just lays there non-threateningly, eventually the kittens come out to play with some baling twine...

which is the most fun...

EVER!!!

This little calico is the most stand-offish of all, and the first to hiss at anything...she's my favorite and I call her 'WorryKitty' cuz she's worried all the time...

See how worried her little face is? Giant tied a chicken feather to a piece of baling twine, and finally WorryKitty was coaxed into playing..."yay, this feather and piece of twine are the best, I'm having so much kitty fun, la-la-la, no worries in the world..."

"BAD DOG!" See that big mug sneaking in on the left of the photo? Beetle finally couldn't stand it anymore and tried to get closer, but WorryKitty isn't having it lol! But I know before it's all over, the cats will all be BFF's with Beetle, happens every time!

In other farm news, everything is green, green, green and we're working and planting in the garden...my birthday week has also begun, and my first gift from Giant was a lilac bush...I LOVE lilacs SO much! Giant planted it for me on Saturday..."live long and prosper lilac bush!"

I found this kinda creepy wad of caterpillars on a different bush in the garden-anyone know what they are? I'm really hoping they turn into beautiful butterflies and not some pest that eats all our veggies!

We have a little fence up around the garden to keep the horses, goats etc out, and when we're out there working, the horses come and graze around the fence. Gus has a goal in life: to make the horses have some kind of reaction to him. He barks and barks and jumps and barks at them...but he is so far beneath their notice and dignity they completely, utterly and wholly ignore him...

which drives him absolutely nuts! Here he is in mid-spaz...you can tell the effect this is having on Oscar...none whatsoever lol!

In other news, all the baby goats have been separated from all the mama goats for weaning...Legacy and Lola are back in GenPop...and the bucks are very happy to see them wink/wink and lol! The moms are so over the babies, but poor little Holly has cried for her Mama Dolly so much that she's made herself hoarse...it's so heartbreaking, I hate going down to the barn and hearing her little squeaky voice, poor baby! But a few more days will pass and every one can be re-united again and all will be well! Until next time...happytrails!
