Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch:Part XXXV

awww, Bottle-Baby Dolly had a baby of her own!!!
Two Sundays ago, we cleaned out a stall and added fresh straw and got it all ready...

to make a maternity ward for Lil and Dolly...turns out, we didn't finish a moment too soon! We moved the girls in Sunday afternoon...
and Monday morning...
Dolly had a baby girl!!!
Dolly was born 3 springs ago during a horrible cold spell...it was 34 degrees BELOW zero the night she was born...several goat mama's had their babies that night and the poor babies were literally freezing while they were being born...
Giant was pulling the babies out of their mama's and I was running them to the house and drying them off and warming  them up in front of the fire...
no matter how hard or fast we worked, baby goats were dying, it was awful...we lost 4 and saved 2-Dolly was one of the babies who survived...
but, the time we had Dolly warmed up and took her back down to the barn to her mama, her mama didn't want her anymore...
so Dolly became a bottle-baby. We fed her about 6 times a day at the beginning...
after a few months, we weaned Dolly off the bottle and she went to live with the other goats full time...
but since Dolly was a bottle-baby and didn't get any mothering from her own goat mother, there was a pretty good chance that Dolly wouldn't accept her own baby...
she was interested in it, and smelled and licked it...but the baby hadn't nursed yet, and the deal isn't sealed until mama lets baby nurse...Giant gave baby a little helping nudge...
and baby figured out where she was supposed to go...

and Dolly let baby nurse, hooray!

Daddy Winston peeks in from the next stall to see the new baby!
Dolly is being an excellent mother and loves the new baby, who been christened Holly, very much! Stay tuned for more baby goaty cuteness coming up and happytrails!
